Best in the Industry

I love this one. It reminds me of the joke, "Remember you're unique... just like everyone else." There are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of hosting companies out there. I would say, off the top of my head, that, of the ones vying for a piece of the nameless, faceless, stack-'em-deep-and-sell-'em-cheap market (which is most of them), about 97.6%* of them make some sort of claim that they are the "best", or their servers are the most "powerful", or their network is the "fastest" or "most reliable", or their prices are the "lowest" (if they're charging anything at all, their prices are not the lowest), or their support technicians are the "friendliest"... and on and on the list of superlatives goes. I know that you don't believe any of that hype (they can't all be the best!), but it must get some attention otherwise these companies wouldn't bother lying. (Oops! Did I just accuse someone of lying?)

Even if you are looking at the website of a company whose name is familiar to you and they have some sort of seal showing that they won an award of some sort, take it with a grain of salt -- and make sure that it came from someone other than Good Housekeeping, for goodness sake. Make your decision about who gets your business based on more than just a single criterion, regardless of whether your most important criterion is a company's claim to be the best, their prices or features, or something else. Testimonials and word-of-mouth are very good indicators, and those can often be found by searching the Web (although you should be careful of fake testimonials planted by the hosts themselves) if you don't already have a personal recommendation from someone you know and trust.

The most laughable area in which you will find such ridiculous claims of being "the best" is from so-called template hosts -- hosting companies that have bought a website template and filled in the blanks to create an instant hosting company website. Of course, if a bunch of them buy the same template, and the template makes a "we're the best" claim, then they all make the identical claim! Think this is a joke? Take a look at the examples in the "relevant links" section on the template hosts page.
